A significant political shift is underway in Sénégal as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially launched his own political party, marking a definitive split from his former ally Ousmane Sonko, who leads the ruling Pastef party.

The Senegalese head of state formally introduced his new political entity this past Saturday. President Faye, previously a key figure within Pastef, has named his new movement the Parti des Patriotes Républicains. This announcement formalizes a political division that has been anticipated for several months.

Amidst a challenging national debt crisis, this development signals the opening of an intense power struggle within the country’s political landscape.

In the weeks leading up to this official launch, a noticeable exodus occurred from Pastef, with an increasing number of its officials defecting to align with President Faye’s emerging faction. This included various regional leaders and prominent members of the party’s youth wing. Furthermore, the new movement has also attracted support from several members of the opposition party, the Alliance pour la République.

President Faye and Ousmane Sonko initially rose to power together in 2024, campaigning under the banner of Pastef, an acronym for its French name, Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité.

However, the alliance between Faye and Sonko, which proved instrumental in their 2024 presidential election victory, ultimately fractured. This breakdown stemmed from fundamental disagreements over crucial policy decisions, notably differing approaches to ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (FMI) regarding a vital loan program, particularly in light of Sénégal’s severe debt situation.

The establishment of President Faye’s new party foreshadows a looming political confrontation between these former allies. This impending showdown is expected to significantly shape the upcoming local elections in 2027 and will likely exert considerable influence over the campaign for the 2029 presidential election.
