At the General Constitutive Assembly of his newly launched political party this Saturday at the King Fahd Palace, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye delivered a significant address. He prominently invoked the memory of those who tragically lost their lives in Senegal during the political unrest of recent years, in remarks widely perceived as a pointed message directed at Ousmane Sonko.
Reflecting on the profound human cost of past political tensions, the head of state made a solemn declaration: “Their memory demands neither vengeance nor silence. Instead, it compels us to ensure that never again in this nation will political disagreement result in the loss of a single life.” This statement underscored a profound call for national reconciliation and shared accountability. However, President Faye’s speech also contained a more assertive warning: “In this country, anyone who disrupts the peace will no longer flourish.”
Although the President meticulously avoided naming any specific individual, numerous political observers interpreted this latter phrase as a barely disguised admonition aimed squarely at Ousmane Sonko. Sonko’s political methodology has long been characterized by a confrontational stance. This interpretation gains credence within the context of an increasingly visible rivalry between the two leading figures in the executive branch, set against a backdrop of significant political realignment, marked by the inauguration of the new presidential party and notable defections from the Pastef movement.
