Cameroon’s Archbishop Kleda raises alarm over prison conditions

The Archbishop of Douala has issued a stern warning regarding the troubling state of detention facilities in Cameroon. In a pastoral letter released in late June, he highlighted concerns over enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and the appalling conditions faced by inmates. The letter also underscores the particular vulnerability of women and minors within the prison system.

Following in the footsteps of Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic visit to Cameroon, Archbishop Kleda has called for a fundamental shift in the nation’s penal approach. His plea centers on restoring human dignity to the core of Cameroon’s incarceration policies, urging authorities to address systemic failures that perpetuate suffering behind bars.
