Socceroos sensation Lucas Herrington, who captivated audiences during the 2026 World Cup, stands on the brink of a monumental career milestone. The 18-year-old central defender, currently showcasing his talent with the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer, is reportedly nearing a transfer to newly-promoted Premier League side Hull City. This potential move is set to establish a new benchmark, making him the most expensive Australian football transfer in history.
Negotiations between the Colorado Rapids and Hull City are actively underway, with figures circulating between A$35 million and A$38 million. This valuation significantly surpasses the existing Australian transfer record, previously held by Harry Souttar. Souttar’s 2023 transfer from Stoke City to Leicester City was valued at approximately £14.5 million, equating to around A$23 million. Football transfer expert Rudy Galetti indicates that Hull City is prepared to commit up to £21.5 million for Herrington, with an additional clause granting the Colorado Rapids 15% of any future resale value for the young defender.
Born in Brisbane on September 5, 2007, Herrington had already garnered significant interest from elite European clubs, including FC Barcelona and Liverpool, even before the World Cup commenced. His exceptional performances throughout the tournament, where he emerged as one of the competition’s most formidable defenders despite his youth, only intensified this widespread attention. An academy product of Brisbane Roar, Herrington is expected to be the sole Socceroo competing in the Premier League for the upcoming season.
Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has publicly affirmed the club’s keen interest in Herrington. Should this transfer materialize, it will firmly cement the rise of a promising new generation of Australian football talent on the global stage, following in the illustrious footsteps of legends like Tim Cahill, Mark Viduka, and Harry Kewell, who have left an indelible mark on Australian football in Europe.
