On july 23, 2026, the headquarters of the Confédération Nationale des Travailleurs du Sénégal (CNTS) in Médina, Dakar, became the epicentre of a historic gathering. Representatives from a cross-section of Senegalese trade unions and civil society organisations came together to unveil the Appel de Dakar, a bold initiative aimed at revitalising the national labour movement amid escalating job insecurity and eroding social dialogue.
At its core, the Appel de Dakar champions an autonomous syndicalism, free from political, administrative or partisan interference. The manifesto underscores the urgent need for a united front that transcends sectoral divides, uniting workers from the formal economy to the informal sector under a shared banner of ethics, competence and grassroots solidarity.
In a direct appeal to government authorities and employers, the initiative demands a return to transparent social dialogue and strict adherence to ratified agreements. The signatories warn that lasting social harmony cannot be imposed by force, stressing that genuine progress requires mutual respect and accountability.
The document also highlights the pivotal role of emerging leaders, urging the youth, women and community-based organisations to play an active part in shaping the future of Senegal’s labour movement. By fostering a new generation of committed activists, the Appel de Dakar seeks to lay the groundwork for a more inclusive and resilient syndicalism.
