Central Mali’s San witnessed a brutal dawn assault on Sunday, as jihadist militants stormed a military installation, leaving at least ten soldiers dead. The attack, swiftly claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), underscores the worsening security turmoil gripping the region.
A local resident recounted harrowing moments: “It was a full-scale terror strike that began just before 5 AM. We heard relentless gunfire and explosions echoing across the city,” they stated, adding that a fragile calm had since settled over the area. Military officials, while confirming the assault, labeled it a failed incursion that was met with a vigorous counterattack by government forces. “Our troops regained full control, and the situation is now stable,” a spokesperson asserted.
Jihadist claim of victory amid rising violence
The JNIM, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated coalition, asserted through a statement that they had seized the military barracks in San, located in the Ségou region. This brazen move comes weeks after another devastating strike in northern Mali, where at least fifty soldiers perished in an ambush on a military convoy—a joint operation involving the JNIM and Tuareg separatists.
