Hundreds of supporters gathered in Dakar to witness the unveiling of Kiiraay, a name derived from Wolof, meaning « protection » or « shield. » Positioned as the party of « Patriotes républicains, » this new political entity is designed to champion republican values, ethics, transparency, fraternity, and diligent work. The head of state declared that his new formation is destined to become the nation’s « majority party. » Already, several elected officials and prominent political figures have transitioned from Pastef to align themselves with the presidential camp.
A political rift now complete
This announcement formalizes months of growing tensions between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko. Following his ascension to power, President Faye initially appointed Sonko as Prime Minister but ultimately dismissed him in May, citing escalating political and economic disagreements. Despite his departure from the government, Ousmane Sonko maintains his position as President of the National Assembly and continues to lead Pastef, which still commands a substantial majority in Parliament.
President Faye himself articulated the party’s foundational principles, stating, “Today in Dakar, we have founded Kiiraay – The Republican Patriots. Kiiraay, in the Wolof language, is what protects. This party was born to serve the Republic, the home that shelters all citizens, and it is open to all republicans. The Homeland first!”

The emergence of Kiiraay ushers in a new era in Senegalese politics. The nascent party is slated to convene its inaugural congress after the rainy season.
