The Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, addressed the nation on Thursday following the Constitutional Council’s ruling that declared the recently passed constitutional reform law unconstitutional. The leader of the Pastef party acknowledged the decision of the “Seven Sages,” stressing that their ruling “must be respected by all.”
“Regardless of differing opinions on the reasoning behind this decision, one fact remains clear: the ruling applies to everyone. We accept it,” Sonko stated in a public statement.
The head of parliament emphasized that this outcome demonstrates how institutional roles, when properly exercised within their designated boundaries, can prevent crises. “When institutions fulfill their duties as intended, no instability arises,” he noted.
Sonko reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to continuing its legislative work without interruption. “The Assembly will proceed with its duties in full capacity. Laws will be enacted or rejected to honor our commitments to the resilient and dignified people of Senegal,” he declared.
