Niger soldiers killed in Boko Haram assault near N’Guigmi

An armed confrontation near N’Guigmi, in southeastern Niger, has left a significant number of military personnel dead following an attack attributed to the Boko Haram insurgent group.

Casualties confirmed after dawn raid

Local reports indicate that ten soldiers and four national guard members were killed in the early hours of Friday morning. Residents of N’Guigmi, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the assault as a coordinated strike targeting a military outpost in the city’s outskirts.

The attack occurred in a region long plagued by extremist violence. N’Guigmi, a garrison town in the Diffa region, sits along the shores of Lake Chad, a vast wetland straddling the borders of Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. Since 2009, the area has become a stronghold for both Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Military response underway

Following the assault, security forces launched a sweeping counter-operation to track down the attackers. Eyewitnesses confirmed that casualties were reported among the assailants as well, though no official confirmation has been provided.

The state-run news agency acknowledged the incident without disclosing a death toll, stating that military personnel “lost their lives in an attack by Boko Haram elements on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.”

The region remains under heightened security due to persistent threats from armed groups operating across the Lake Chad Basin.
