Football circles are buzzing with the latest twist in Mason Greenwood’s transfer saga, as the English winger’s move from Olympique de Marseille (OM) shifts unexpectedly from AS Roma to Fenerbahçe. This unexpected turn has left many in Italy questioning the reliability of such negotiations.
The Marseille-based club, under financial strain, has been actively seeking to offload Greenwood to streamline its wage bill. The player’s potential move to Fenerbahçe marks a stark contrast to earlier reports that pointed toward a decisive agreement with Roma, where manager Gian Piero Gasperini had identified him as a top target. This abrupt change of course has sparked frustration in Italian football circles.
Transfer negotiations under scrutiny
Italian football analyst Roberto Pruzzo voiced his concerns over the unfolding situation, stating that such negotiations rarely conclude favorably. “Greenwood’s case is a classic example of how these deals often backfire. There’s always doubt about whether the player genuinely wants to join a club, and in the end, they end up elsewhere,” he remarked. His colleague Fernando Orsi chimed in, adding, “Football won’t come to a halt without Greenwood. Beyond his skills, his character raises questions, and for half the transfer fee, Roma could secure a far more reliable player. The World Cup serves as a stage for talent like Greenwood.”
Roma’s alternative options gain traction
Meanwhile, journalist Paolo Marcacci has already shifted focus to potential replacements for Greenwood at Roma. “Moreira is an outstanding player whose style aligns perfectly with Gasperini’s philosophy. His market value has soared, partly due to his World Cup performances, but let’s not forget options like Nusa, Garnacho, and others. Tresoldi also delivered a strong season. Gasperini could refine Moreira into an even more complete player. Greenwood’s salary is simply unattainable for Italian clubs, and by pursuing him, Roma risks missing out on the Champions League.”
