Yopougon hosts launch of Côte d’Ivoire’s first women’s celebration week
On Thursday, July 30, the advocacy group Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) inaugurated Côte d’Ivoire’s maiden National Week of Women Nation-Builders at Yopougon’s city hall. The four-day event, running from August 1 to 4, 2026, coincides with the 66th anniversary of Côte d’Ivoire’s independence.
Reflecting on women’s progress and future challenges
The initiative, themed “66 Years of Independence: Women’s Achievements and Future Outlook”, aims to spotlight women’s contributions to the nation’s political, economic, social and cultural development. It also seeks to identify persistent challenges and foster dialogue on policy solutions.
FIP president Rebecca Yao emphasized the importance of this reflection: “We recognized the need to assess women’s progress since independence, pinpoint remaining obstacles and propose actionable solutions.”
An ambitious program featuring discussions, exhibitions and recognition
The August 1-3 segment at Yopougon’s city hall will feature a national symposium with one opening panel and sixteen thematic discussions covering critical areas such as women’s leadership, healthcare, education, economic empowerment, youth engagement and women’s rights. An accompanying exhibition will showcase the journeys of pioneering women alongside successful female-led entrepreneurship initiatives.
The symposium’s outcomes will be compiled into a white paper to be submitted to relevant authorities for implementation tracking. The week concludes on August 4 with a gala dinner at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 pioneering women will be honored for their vital contributions to Côte d’Ivoire’s development since 1960.
Building a lasting tradition for women’s empowerment
Rebecca Yao announced plans to make this an annual event. “Before introducing new proposals, we’ll revisit resolutions from each previous edition to measure progress.” Yopougon’s deputy Mireille Bamba commended the initiative, affirming the full support of deputy-mayor Adama Bictogo.
The organizers envision this week becoming a permanent platform for reflection, dialogue and formal recognition of women’s indispensable role in nation-building.
