The National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, National Defense, and Regional Integration Committee reviewed a bill proposing the establishment of a dedicated facility for manufacturing uniforms for the country’s defense and security forces. Presented by Defense Minister Brigitte Onkanowa, the initiative aims to shift from reliance on imported military attire to local production, reinforcing the Gabonese Armed Forces’ operational independence.
Minister Onkanowa highlighted the growing strain on logistics and budgets caused by foreign procurement, particularly as troop numbers expand. She emphasized that self-sufficiency in uniform manufacturing is no longer just an option but a strategic necessity to secure supply chains and reduce financial vulnerabilities for the defense sector.
Quality assurance and financial oversight in focus
Lawmakers welcomed the proposal but sought clarity on execution standards. Deputy Jean Gaspard Ntoutoume Ayi stressed the importance of maintaining production quality on par with imported uniforms, noting the potential for job creation and nurturing national expertise. Meanwhile, Deputy Jean François Ndongou raised concerns about fiscal discipline, questioning safeguards against cost overruns.
In response, Onkanowa reassured that the facility will serve as a centralized support unit for all deployed forces, streamlining procurement while ensuring stricter financial controls. With consensus growing around the benefits of enhanced sovereignty and cost efficiency, the bill was forwarded to a specialized commission for finalization, paving the way for swift adoption.
