Government clarifies President Paul Biya’s situation amid speculation
The Cameroonian government has categorically denied rumors suggesting President Paul Biya is no longer alive or has resigned from office. In a statement, the government’s spokesperson, René Emmanuel Sadi, confirmed that the President remains in Switzerland and is in stable condition after a recent medical procedure.
Addressing concerns about a potential power vacuum, Sadi emphasized that Paul Biya has not stepped down and will return to Cameroon soon. While the exact date of his return remains undisclosed, the spokesperson assured the public that state institutions continue to function normally under the leadership of key administrative officials.
No constitutional vacancy declared
The government has reiterated that the question of a power vacuum cannot arise, as the Constitutional Council—the sole body authorized to declare such a vacancy—has not made any such determination. Sadi also clarified that President Biya is not currently hospitalized, though he did undergo a medical intervention in Geneva.
This official statement follows weeks of speculation about the President’s health and whereabouts, particularly given his prolonged stay in Switzerland. The government’s response aims to dispel misinformation and restore public confidence in the stability of Cameroon’s leadership.
