Algeria initiates 40 MW power plant construction in N’Djamena

On Monday, June 8, a significant milestone was reached in N’Djamena with the official launch of a 40-megawatt power plant project. This initiative, aimed at bolstering Chad‘s energy grid, saw the laying of the first stone by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Chadian counterpart, Allamaye Halina.

This energy infrastructure is a direct contribution from Algérie to the Republic of Tchad. The decision, spearheaded by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscores a commitment to fostering economic synergy and infrastructure growth across the African continent.

Modern technology for growing energy needs

Sonelgaz International has been tasked with the construction of the facility. Utilizing advanced gas turbines, the plant is designed to provide the necessary capacity to meet the surging demand for electricity in the Chadian capital and surrounding regions. Chadian officials emphasized that expanding power production is now a critical priority to sustain domestic, industrial, and service sector growth.

A vision for continental integration

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb highlighted that this project is a component of a broader strategy for African integration and collective advancement. This development follows through on promises made during President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s state visit to Algérie in April 2026.

Beyond this specific energy project, Alger continues to engage in various regional initiatives spanning transport, telecommunications, and infrastructure. The Algerian government views energy investment as a fundamental pillar for ensuring stability and progress throughout Afrique.

Once operational, the plant will stabilize the Chadian national grid, ensuring a more consistent and reliable power supply for both private households and commercial enterprises.
