Chelsea Football Club has successfully appealed a Premier League sanction that initially included a six-point deduction and a hefty fine. The appeal court overturned the point deduction, replacing it with a suspended transfer ban instead.

The Football Association (FA) identified breaches of financial regulations spanning from 2009 to 2022, when the club was under the ownership of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. The bulk of the violations occurred between 2010 and 2016. The current ownership, who acquired Chelsea in 2022, uncovered these irregularities during the takeover process. In September 2025, the FA formally lodged 74 charges against the club.

Between 2011 and 2018, during Abramovich’s tenure, Chelsea made payments totaling £47 million (€54.5 million) to unregistered agents and third parties. Among the transfers highlighted in the investigation were Eden Hazard’s move from Lille in 2012, as well as acquisitions of Samuel Eto’o and Willian from Anji Makhatchkala in 2013, André Schürrle from Bayer Leverkusen in 2013, Nemanja Matic from Benfica in 2014, and David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016.
