Strengthening alliances: AES and Russia chart new diplomatic course in Niamey
In a significant move to bolster regional security and economic cooperation, Niamey hosted the second round of high-level diplomatic consultations between the foreign ministers of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia on July 8. The gathering brought together Niger’s Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, and Russia’s Sergey Lavrov to finalize key strategic agreements.
Mali’s Foreign Minister Diop highlighted the fruitful and consistent exchanges between the AES and Russia, emphasizing how these have yielded tangible progress in both military partnerships and economic development initiatives. These efforts are underpinned by a shared diplomatic vision that prioritizes regional stability and mutual growth.
On counterterrorism, the AES ministers underscored the urgent need to enhance coordinated military actions. Their goal is to strengthen the operational capabilities of the AES Unified Force while reinforcing economic partnerships outlined in the Confederation’s Year II roadmap. This dual approach aims to simultaneously address security threats and foster sustainable development across the Sahel.
During the meeting, Russia’s Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed his country’s unwavering commitment to deepening mutually beneficial ties with the AES. He reiterated Moscow’s support not only for regional security efforts but also for initiatives promoting sustainable development and improving living standards for local populations.
This Niamey session follows the first AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, marking another step in Lavrov’s ongoing African diplomatic tour. The discussions reflect a growing alignment between the AES bloc and Russia, with both sides seeking to consolidate their common objectives in the short term.
