In a historic declaration, the United States has unequivocally stated its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, marking a significant shift in international policy. The announcement came in a presidential message to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Morocco’s Throne Day.

The U.S. President conveyed warm congratulations to the Moroccan monarch and people, highlighting the enduring bond between the two nations. « This year, we celebrate 250 years of American history and lasting friendship with Morocco—strengthened by mutual trust and respect, » the message read.

Western Sahara dispute nears resolution

Addressing the decades-long Western Sahara conflict, the U.S. leader firmly stated, « Any alternative to Morocco’s autonomy proposal prolongs the status quo, which is unacceptable. This dispute must end now. The United States will continue driving progress toward a lasting solution. »

The message also praised Morocco’s leadership in regional stability, emphasizing its role in combating extremism and ensuring security. « Your Majesty’s wise leadership anchors stability in the region, » it noted. « Morocco’s unwavering commitment to peace and security—including through its pivotal role in the Abraham Accords—reflects a partnership of immense value to the U.S. »

Strategic partnership extends to Sahel security

The U.S. President underscored the importance of collaboration with Morocco in countering regional threats, stating, « We will work together to safeguard the Sahel’s security. » This joint effort aligns with Morocco’s contributions to regional stability and economic development.

Economic and technological collaboration to deepen ties

The American leader highlighted Morocco’s Vision for Growth as a catalyst for shared prosperity, noting plans to bolster bilateral economic ties. « I have directed my teams to advance economic and social development with Morocco—including in Western Sahara, » the message revealed.

Looking ahead, the U.S. pledged to strengthen technological and innovation partnerships across key sectors. « Reliable American technology will continue to empower Morocco’s progress in energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense for the next 250 years, » the President affirmed.

Concluding on an optimistic note, he declared, « Together, we will forge a new era—one prioritising the interests of our peoples. »
