Tchad makes strategic gains at the Baku Urban Forum

The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development, and Housing presented the outcomes of the mission to Baku, Azerbaijan, where the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) was held. The debriefing session, held at the ministry’s headquarters, brought together key participants from the national delegation, including the First Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, representatives from the National Housing and Urban Development Corporation (SOPROFIM), and technical experts from UN-Habitat.

Urban resilience and sustainable city planning take center stage

The delegation’s focus during the forum centered on critical urban challenges: affordable housing, sustainable urbanization, and climate-resilient city planning. The Tchad delegation positioned itself as an active voice in continental discussions, advocating for policies that align with Africa’s urban development priorities. A dedicated pavilion showcased the country’s flagship initiatives in urban planning and housing, highlighting progress and future goals.

Key partnerships and funding opportunities unlocked

During the forum, Tchad secured a landmark visit from the UN-Habitat Executive Director, scheduled for September 9–11, 2026. This high-level engagement will allow for on-the-ground assessments of urban realities and the review of priority projects proposed by national authorities. Additionally, Tchad has been selected as one of ten eligible countries for the UN Green Climate Fund, thanks to a joint initiative with Kenya. This inclusion paves the way for substantial financing aimed at enhancing urban resilience, particularly in flood-prone areas.

New regional alliances for urban progress

Beyond formal sessions, Tchadian officials engaged in strategic discussions with counterparts from Kenya and Morocco. These exchanges focused on strengthening cooperation in social housing, slum upgrading, and sustainable urban expansion. Future joint missions and knowledge-sharing programs are in the pipeline, aiming to accelerate urban transformation across partner nations.

A pathway to inclusive and climate-resilient urban growth

The Minister emphasized that Tchad’s participation at WUF13 marks a turning point, offering tangible pathways to convert international partnerships into impactful projects for local communities. The forum’s outcomes reinforce Tchad’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable, and climate-adaptive urban development, in line with the government’s long-term vision under the leadership of the President of the Republic.
