Mbombela (South Africa) – Law enforcement officials in the Mpumalanga province have apprehended a man following a disturbing physical attack on his elderly grandmother in the Nkomazi municipality. The arrest, carried out on Sunday, June 7, 2026, was triggered by the widespread circulation of a video on social media platforms documenting the assault.
The incident occurred at a local tavern in eMagogeni. The footage reveals the suspect repeatedly punching and kicking the elderly woman before escalating the violence by striking her with a beer crate. The recording also captures the presence of an unidentified individual laughing in the background while the victim lay on the ground, severely injured and unable to defend herself.
Pension fund dispute sparks violence in Mpumalanga
Preliminary investigations indicate that the confrontation was rooted in a financial disagreement. The victim had noticed that her pension money—funds set aside for essential groceries and electricity—had gone missing. She went to the tavern to confront her grandson and seek an explanation, at which point the physical assault began.
The swift reaction of local police, aided by the viral nature of the video, led to the rapid identification and capture of the suspect. He is currently being held in custody and is expected to appear before a provincial court shortly to face charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
