Senegal’s new prime minister warned by predecessor Ousmane Sonko
During the official handover ceremony at the Primature in Dakar, outgoing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko delivered a pointed message to his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô. The transition ceremony, held on a Friday morning, highlighted both personal respect and the challenges ahead for the new government.
The event began with Al Aminou Lô expressing deep appreciation for Sonko’s leadership, recalling their initial collaboration in 2024. « It was in April 2024 that he reached out to me, despite not knowing me. I answered his call and he placed his trust in me, » the new Prime Minister shared. This early interaction marked the start of a partnership centered on Senegal’s National Transformation Agenda, a sweeping reform initiative under President Macky Sall.
Al Aminou Lô went on to detail his growing responsibilities within the executive branch. « The President invited me to join his team to implement the National Transformation Agenda. The results speak for themselves, and I am proud of what we achieved together, » he stated. He emphasized Sonko’s role in fostering cooperation between the Prime Minister’s Office and the Presidency during this period. « As he prepared to step down, Sonko asked me to remain the bridge between these institutions, ensuring the Agenda’s continuity. I have honored that commitment, » he explained.
The outgoing Prime Minister’s advice was not limited to formalities. « He made it clear from the start that the road ahead will be difficult, » Al Aminou Lô revealed, reflecting on a conversation just days earlier. Despite the challenges, he reassured the nation of his determination to maintain stability and progress. « I will continue to seek his guidance whenever necessary. His experience and wisdom will be invaluable as we move forward, » he added.
The handover ceremony underscored a rare moment of unity between two leaders from different political backgrounds. Sonko’s words carried both caution and encouragement, setting the tone for what promises to be a pivotal chapter in Senegal’s governance. As the new Prime Minister assumes his duties, the nation watches closely, hopeful for a seamless transition and renewed momentum in national development.
