For over two months, the whereabouts of Cameroon’s President Paul Biya have sparked curiosity and concern. As the veteran leader remains in Geneva, Switzerland, civil society groups and opposition parties are questioning whether he is still alive. At 93 years old, Biya, re-elected in 2025 after a disputed vote, holds the unenviable title of the world’s oldest sitting head of state.
His absence from Yaoundé began on June 7, when he embarked on what was officially described as a “private stay”. This marks the first time in his 44-year presidency that he has spent more than 50 consecutive days abroad for personal reasons. “Cameroon operates in reverse—it’s a nation led by its oldest citizen, yet one that spends more time in foreign lands than in its own presidential palace,” commented a local editorial.
Despite his prolonged absence, the Presidency continues to release official decrees bearing Biya’s signature. The most recent, issued on August 3, included sweeping military reshuffles, appointing key commanders to strategic positions. The move has intensified speculation about who is truly in control behind the scenes.
