As coastal challenges intensify along Bénin’s coastline and the Gulf of Guinea, the nation has taken a decisive step forward in maritime expertise. Through the OPERA (Ocean Prediction Enhancement in Regions of Africa) initiative—a cutting-edge international ocean forecasting training program—Bénin has positioned its universities and researchers at the forefront of global marine science.
Bénin’s academic institutions drive a world-class maritime training program
The initiative, coordinated nationally by the UNESCO Chair / CIPMA at the Université d’Abomey-Calavi (UAC), recently concluded a seven-week online course (MOOC) that drew nearly 1,200 participants from 111 countries. Bénin not only ranked among the top represented nations but also led in terms of engagement, with its educators, students, and environmental managers playing a pivotal role in the program’s success.
Dr. Frédéric Bonou, a researcher and lecturer at UAC, highlighted the practical focus of the training: “This course goes beyond theory. Each module is designed to help learners directly apply their new knowledge to real-world coastal challenges—whether they’re local fishermen, environmental managers, or marine scientists.”
Advanced tools for sustainable coastal and fisheries management
The 21-hour interactive program equipped participants with state-of-the-art technologies, including satellite observation systems, Argo floats, and advanced numerical models. These tools empower Bénin’s professionals to address critical maritime issues with precision:
- Coastal erosion prevention: Improved forecasting of wave patterns and tidal dynamics to safeguard Bénin’s fragile shoreline.
- Sustainable fisheries management: Mapping and predicting high-concentration zones of fish resources to optimize sustainable catches.
- Maritime safety: Enhanced surveillance of Beninese territorial waters and better risk assessment for pollution incidents.
A select group of 500 learners received personalized mentorship, culminating in an academic certification issued jointly by the UNESCO Chair at Université d’Abomey-Calavi and the Université de Toulouse.
A strategic partnership backed by European funding
The program’s achievements stem from a robust collaboration between Université d’Abomey-Calavi, the Gulf of Guinea Ocean Sciences Summer School (GGOSSS) network, and Mercator Ocean International. Financial support came from the European Union as part of the Arc X / Global Gateway initiative.
By placing UAC’s young scientists and volunteers at the heart of this international expert network—comprising researchers from Bénin, France, the United States, and Spain—Bénin is reinforcing its commitment to leveraging ocean science as a sovereign tool for sustainable development and maritime security.
