Jihadist groups operating in the Sahel’s three-border area have released a video they claim documents the assault on the Inates military base in Niger’s Tillabéry region, which occurred on June 17, 2026. The footage and accompanying statements allege the attack commenced with mortar fire directed at the base’s facilities. The assailants then surrounded the base before launching an offensive using automatic weapons and grenade launchers, presenting it as a meticulously planned operation.

The video’s authors assert that Nigerien soldiers offered weak resistance before attempting to withdraw. They further claim that multiple ambushes were set around the base to block any retreat or the arrival of reinforcements.

Casualty figures provided by the jihadist groups remain unverifiable through independent means. They claim to have killed at least 80 Nigerien troops, destroyed seven armored vehicles, six pick-up trucks, and nine fuel tankers. Additionally, they allege capturing twenty pick-up trucks, eighteen machine guns, one sniper rifle, several grenade launchers, three mortars, and large stocks of ammunition.

As of now, these numbers have not been confirmed by Nigerien authorities or any independent source. In such conflicts, armed organisations routinely use their own videos as propaganda tools to showcase operational strength, intimidate opponents, and boost recruitment. The tolls they release may therefore be exaggerated or incomplete.

Regardless, this latest attack underscores the ongoing deterioration of security in the Tillabéry region, where Nigerien forces face increasingly sophisticated offensives. Despite strategic shifts over recent years and strengthened military cooperation with new partners, armed groups continue to demonstrate their ability to plan complex assaults on military positions.

The release of this video also serves a strategic purpose. Beyond the violence of the combat, it aims to project the jihadists’ power, undermine the morale of security forces, and send a message to all actors involved in the fight against insurgency in the Sahel.
