The Government of Niger took center stage this week as the United Nations launched a critical strategic review of its West Africa and Sahel operations. The initiative, led by United Nations Special Envoy Sahle-Work Zewde, kicked off with a high-level meeting between the envoy and Niger’s transitional leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, in Niamey.
UNOWAS review begins in Niamey amid regional transformations
The visit marks the first leg of a comprehensive diplomatic tour that will span both Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member states and members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). The review aims to assess how effectively the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) has addressed its core responsibilities in a region undergoing significant political and security shifts.
Key objectives of the mission include evaluating UNOWAS’s effectiveness in conflict prevention, mediation, and cooperation with regional governments. The findings will shape future priorities for the UN agency as it navigates complex challenges across West Africa and the Sahel.

During her meeting with President Tiani, Special Envoy Sahle-Work Zewde highlighted her long-standing relationship with Niger, dating back to 1993 when she participated in an African Union election observation mission in the country. She acknowledged the progress made since then while emphasizing the importance of sustained dialogue between the United Nations and regional governments.

At the conclusion of the talks, President Tiani acknowledged the objectives of the UN review and reaffirmed Niger’s full commitment to contributing to the process. The meeting was attended by key government officials, including members of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), Presidential Cabinet Director and Government Spokesperson Dr. Soumana Boubacar, and the Advisor for Strategic and Diplomatic Affairs.
