Mountaga Tall’s son vanishes amid Mali’s political crisis
The whereabouts of prominent Malian opposition leader and lawyer Mountaga Tall remain unknown following his reported abduction in Bamako on May 2. Now, his eldest son, Cheick Mamadou Tall, has also disappeared, deepening concerns over the escalating tensions gripping the West African nation.
Mountaga Tall’s son reported missing after distressing phone call
Cheick Mamadou Tall was last heard from on May 16 when he received a call before disappearing without a trace. His disappearance follows the abduction of his father on May 2 in Bamako’s capital. Family sources describe the elder Tall being forcibly taken by unidentified, masked assailants. Authorities have yet to disclose any details regarding his detention or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
From military ally to vocal critic
Mountaga Tall, a once-influential figure in the M5 movement that played a pivotal role in the 2020 ousting of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, initially supported Mali’s current military leadership. However, he later became one of its most outspoken opponents. Tall has been defending several military personnel accused of attempting to destabilize state institutions and has challenged the legality of the transitional authorities’ decision to dissolve political parties.
Mounting insecurity fuels political instability
These disturbing events unfold against a backdrop of growing insecurity and political volatility in Mali. Late April saw coordinated attacks on strategic military positions by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). In response, Tall’s legal team has urgently called on judicial and administrative authorities to take immediate action to locate the missing men and uncover the truth behind their abduction.
