Since its historic return to the African Union in 2017, the Kingdom of Morocco has systematically bolstered its strategic standing within the continental body. Extensive regional consultations across North Africa paved the way for the Kingdom to secure multiple high-level positions within the organization’s various organs and committees. This evolving landscape underscores Morocco’s rising role in continental governance, reflecting its unwavering commitment to the African Union’s core priorities—from institutional reforms and good governance to financial sustainability, economic integration, and addressing development challenges.

Nine top-tier positions secured

The Kingdom has clinched nine prestigious leadership roles, ranking first among its sub-regional peers in elective representation. Morocco will serve as Vice-President of the ministerial committee overseeing African candidacies within the international system. Additionally, it will hold the Vice-Presidency of the Contributions Committee, a pivotal body tasked with assessing member states’ financial contributions.

Key technical committees

In specialized technical committees—critical to shaping common policies—Morocco will participate in the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee and the Committee on Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry, and Mining Resources.

Beyond these, the Kingdom has been appointed Vice-President of the Permanent Representatives Committee on Institutional Reforms and will chair the Sub-Committee on Environmental Issues. Its influence extends further to the Sub-Committee on Human Rights, Democracy, and Governance.

Migration governance and human-centered policies

Morocco’s leadership was further cemented with its election to the Board of the African Centre for Migration Studies and Research. This appointment empowers Moroccan experts to actively shape policies within the institution. The move aligns with the vision of King Mohammed VI, whose African migration strategy prioritizes humanitarian solidarity, shared responsibility, and collaborative solutions. These nine strategic roles solidify Morocco’s dynamic influence and ongoing contributions to the organization’s operations.

From isolation to strategic leadership

Morocco’s official reintegration into the African Union on January 30, 2017—after a 33-year hiatus following its withdrawal from the Organization of African Unity in 1984—marked a decisive shift. This return broke the cycle of exclusion and unlocked significant diplomatic achievements, particularly in territorial integrity. The Kingdom transformed its approach to the Sahara dossier, shifting from a reactive stance to proactive leadership, thereby neutralizing adversarial maneuvers within the Union’s own structures.

This pragmatic strategy ensures Morocco’s indispensable direct presence to safeguard its fundamental interests. The bold diplomatic initiatives of recent years have not only smoothed reintegration but also accelerated the signing of bilateral agreements with numerous African states. These developments have ushered in a new era of economic cooperation and continental cohesion.
