Moroccan motorists will soon traverse the Donald Trump Highway—a 1,055-kilometer expressway connecting Tiznit and Dakhla. King Mohammed VI announced the tribute on August 1st, spotlighting Trump’s historic 2020 recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara region (Western Sahara).
“In gratitude for this act of friendship and peace, I have decided to name one of the kingdom’s most vital road networks after Donald Trump,” the monarch declared in a July 2nd correspondence. The road, stretching across Morocco’s southern landscape, stands as “Africa’s longest highway,” the king noted.
This diplomatic milestone stems from Trump’s December 2020 policy shift, endorsing a Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara—contingent on Morocco normalizing ties with Israel. The resource-rich territory, formerly a Spanish colony until 1975, remains partially controlled by Morocco but is classified as a non-self-governing territory by the United Nations.
