In Bamako, the capital of Mali, a tragic incident unfolded at dawn, leaving two young men dead after they were shot by military personnel near the headquarters of the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision du Mali (ORTM). The confrontation occurred around 5:30 AM local time in a high-security zone that also includes a well-known hotel in the city center.

According to military authorities, the two individuals, riding a motorcycle, allegedly attempted to breach security barriers surrounding the ORTM compound. However, conflicting accounts suggest the victims were seasonal workers heading to their construction site, raising questions about the circumstances of the shooting.

Security measures and conflicting testimonies

The area has been under heightened security since late April, following coordinated attacks by armed groups in several localities across Mali, including Bamako. Military checkpoints were established to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive government and military sites.

An anonymous driver who witnessed the incident shared her perspective, emphasizing the risks of ignoring security protocols: « Everyone knows that during such volatile periods, no one should attempt to enter this restricted zone without prior authorization. If alerts are issued, drivers must stop immediately to avoid serious consequences. In this case, the military personnel acted within their legal rights. »

public reactions and unanswered questions

Not everyone agrees with the military’s response. Seyba, a local resident, expressed skepticism about the use of lethal force: « If the goal was to stop the motorcyclists, why not disable the bike or wound them to detain them? Now that they’re dead, we may never learn the truth about their intentions. Even if they were suspected of wrongdoing, their deaths leave too many questions unanswered. »

Investigations on the ground indicate the two men were indeed seasonal workers en route to their job site. Authorities speculate they may have been unaware of the tightened security measures in place.

In the aftermath of the shooting, security around the ORTM has been further reinforced. Similar measures have been implemented at military installations and the Bamako-Sénou International Airport, where access is now strictly limited to authorized personnel and travelers.
