The Kingdom of Morocco has once again underscored its unwavering dedication to achieving a political resolution for the ongoing situation in Libya, addressing the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council.
During an official session of the AU Peace and Security Council dedicated to Libyan affairs, Mohamed Arrouchi, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, reaffirmed the nation’s backing of internal reconciliation efforts. He emphasized the importance of fostering inter-Libyan dialogue to build consensus and solidify progress among the various stakeholders.
Arrouchi highlighted that the Skhirat Agreement, established on December 17, 2015, continues to serve as a credible framework for a lasting political settlement. He reiterated the necessity of upholding Libya’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity as essential foundations for long-term stability.
The Moroccan diplomat conveyed appreciation for the leadership of King Mohammed VI, noting the Kingdom’s active role in supporting the African Union’s initiatives to bring peace and security to the continent, with a specific focus on navigating the complexities of the Libyan crisis.
Furthermore, Arrouchi referenced the progress made through meetings in Tripoli and Zenten, which culminated in an agreement signed on January 7, 2026, between representatives from the Government of National Unity and the eastern administration.
He underscored that Morocco remains a consistent partner in the Libyan political process, working to bridge divides through mediation that respects international law, the Skhirat Agreement, and the understandings reached in Bouznika. By prioritizing a home-grown, Libyan-led solution, Morocco advocates for a peaceful settlement that avoids military intervention in favor of diplomatic dialogue.
