Laurent Gbagbo reaffirmed as PPA-CI president in Abidjan congress

Ivory Coast’s PPA-CI (Parti des Peuples Africains – Côte d’Ivoire) held its first ordinary congress on May 14, 2026, at the Palais de la Culture in Treichville, Abidjan. The landmark event concluded with the unanimous reaffirmation of Laurent Gbagbo, the former Ivorian president, as party leader, alongside a series of disciplinary measures targeting several members.

Unanimous leadership renewal for Laurent Gbagbo

At 81 years old, Laurent Gbagbo was reinstated as PPA-CI president by acclamation in front of nearly 3,000 delegates. The decision followed a recommendation from the party’s Central Committee, which sought to maintain Gbagbo’s leadership amid growing political challenges. The PPA-CI, founded in October 2021, continues to position Gbagbo as its central figure as the party strengthens its stance in the opposition.

This move underscores the party’s strategic focus ahead of upcoming elections, signaling its intent to consolidate influence within Ivory Coast’s political landscape.

Internal restructuring: Disciplinary action reshapes party ranks

Beyond the leadership renewal, the congress served as a platform for internal restructuring, with multiple disciplinary actions taken against party members. Several executives faced sanctions for violating electoral guidelines during the 2025 legislative and presidential elections.

Three high-ranking officials—Awa Domelo, Fernand Ailé, and Kanga Kwaku Antoine—were expelled from the party. Additionally, 25 militants received suspensions ranging from 12 to 18 months, including Stéphane Kipré and Ouien George Armand, who were barred for 18 months each.

Key disciplinary cases highlight internal divisions

The expulsions and suspensions stem from allegations of dissent, particularly concerning the support of dissident candidacies despite the party’s official boycott directives. The case of Awa Domelo drew significant attention, as her candidacy was initially framed as a contingency measure due to legal uncertainties surrounding Gbagbo’s eligibility.

Party leadership emphasized that these sanctions aim to reinforce discipline and clarify the PPA-CI’s political direction as it prepares for future electoral battles.

Strategic positioning ahead of Ivory Coast’s political shifts

The congress took place amid a broader political realignment in Ivory Coast, where the ruling RHDP continues to assert its organizational dominance. By reaffirming Gbagbo’s leadership, the PPA-CI seeks to reassert its relevance and signal its readiness to challenge the status quo in upcoming elections.

The party’s leadership renewal and internal restructuring reflect a deliberate effort to streamline operations and strengthen its electoral prospects.
