Abidjan – A contingent of one hundred and fifty elite soldiers, clad in combat fatigues and camouflage, marched with weapons at the ready, their faces obscured by masks, balaclavas, and berets. Led by a coordinator proudly displaying the red, yellow, and green Guinean flag, with snipers positioned strategically behind, this special unit executed its renowned “Chameleon Step,” setting a distinctive rhythm for their passage.
The Forces Spéciales of the Republic of Guinea received thunderous applause from the gathered public, punctuated by standing ovations and military salutes from the official viewing stand. Their formidable display was a highlight of the 66th anniversary celebrations of Côte d’Ivoire’s independence.
A memorable display in Abidjan
Concluding the foreign contingents’ parade in Abidjan on Friday, August 7th, this impressive showing by the Guinean detachment garnered significant attention. Both on national television and across social media platforms, journalists, bloggers, and internet users universally praised the Guinean forces’ powerful demonstration.
Deloy Dadié, an Ivorian observer, expressed his admiration, stating, “I am Ivorian, but for me, this was the best parade. Moreover, it was so serene; I keep watching it. I even downloaded the video. Thank you, Guinea.” Brice Kouadio echoed this enthusiasm, remarking, “The best for me this year: imposing, powerful, fierce, and elegant!”
Constant Silué went further, comparing the Guinean performance to that of the Ivorian army. He shared, “I enjoyed the Guinean army’s parade more than our own. It’s my first time seeing the Guinean special forces. It’s magnificent. Many thanks to Guinea. You are sincere and true neighbors.”
Pride and regional recognition
In Guinea, the images of the parade ignited a wave of national pride. Bory Diallo commented that “the sub-region is clearly impressed by the Guinean army.”
Ibrahima Bah highlighted the profound symbolic meaning of their participation, noting, “Maintaining strong relations with neighbors is always beneficial. There is a substantial Guinean community in Côte d’Ivoire, and seeing our army parade on such an occasion fills us Guineans, especially those residing in this beautiful country, with immense pride.”
Sekou Moriba echoed this sentiment, stating, “Despite everything, when we see them, our hearts are filled with a kind of pride.”
This is not the first instance of the Guinean Special Forces capturing such widespread attention. Since their notable debut during Guinea’s independence day celebrations on October 2, 2018, this elite unit has steadily cemented its reputation as one of the nation’s most spectacular military formations.
