Gabon recently showcased its ambitious strategy for industrial transformation at the prestigious Boao Forum, held in Perth, Australia. Hermann Immongault, the nation’s Vice-President of the Government (VPG), was a key speaker on a panel dedicated to the drivers of growth within the green industry sector. He articulated Gabon’s strategic direction to an audience comprising investors, public officials, and economic partners.

During his address, Vice-President Immongault highlighted a comprehensive approach centered on the local processing of natural resources, fostering local content development, embracing innovation, and securing financial cooperation. This strategy aims to cultivate a sustainable and highly competitive economy for Gabon.

Drawing on Gabon’s abundant forests, critical strategic minerals, and significant energy potential, Hermann Immongault passionately advocated for the establishment of robust, integrated value chains. “Gabon’s aspiration extends beyond merely being a supplier of raw materials. We are committed to building complete value chains,” he declared. He further stressed the importance of an industrialization model that generates employment and creates opportunities for Gabonese enterprises, local workers, and communities across the nation.

The Vice-President cited the Nkok Special Economic Zone, managed by GSEZ, as a prime example of this commitment. This zone stands as Africa’s inaugural industrial hub certified as carbon-neutral under the stringent ISO 14064-1 standard. Its innovative model involves the repurposing of wood residues and the recycling of plastics and used tires. He also drew attention to the ongoing Belinga project, a collaborative effort with the Australian firm Fortescue, which is poised to forge a cutting-edge “green iron” industry.

Discussions at the forum also focused on the essential financing required for this transition. Hermann Immongault called for the strengthening of international partnerships to attract greater volumes of green financing, always emphasizing the critical need to safeguard the interests of local communities impacted by these developments.
