Following months of friction over social media oversight, Gabon and TikTok have pivoted toward constructive engagement. During the AI for Good / WSIS Global Summit in Geneva, Switzerland (July 7-11), Gabon’s Minister of Digital Economy, Mark-Alexandre Doumba, held strategic discussions with TikTok’s regional leadership to assess the platform’s adherence to Gabon’s updated digital regulations.
This high-level meeting unfolded against a backdrop of stricter governance for digital platforms in Gabon. Key topics included social media oversight, user safety—particularly for minors—and TikTok’s commitments to comply with Gabon’s freshly enacted laws. The delegation, led by Emir Gelen (Regional Director for Middle East, Eurasia, and Africa) and Maria Cohn (Deputy Director of Government Relations), presented a comprehensive quarterly moderation report for early 2026.
TikTok’s data revealed 23,504 sensitive posts removed in the first quarter of 2026, including:
- 13,930 posts endangering minors’ safety and well-being
- 10,784 posts promoting regulated goods, services, or activities
- Content featuring sexualized material or abuse involving minors, which dominated the removals
The platform emphasized significant upgrades to its moderation systems, boasting:
- 99.8% of violating content removed proactively before user reports
- 92.9% of violations detected pre-view
- 97.2% of flagged content removed within 48 hours
- 4,352 permanent account suspensions during the period
Both parties agreed to extend their collaboration for the next 12 months—the duration set for compliance under Gabon’s new social media ordinance. Minister Doumba underscored the need to balance digital innovation with citizen protection, stressing Gabon’s resolve to combat misinformation, cyberbullying, hate speech, and harmful content that threatens youth mental health.
This dialogue signals Gabon’s firm stance on holding major digital platforms accountable while fostering a safer, more responsible online ecosystem for its citizens.
