Chad has issued a strict directive prohibiting its water and forestry agents from wearing military uniforms, insignia, ranks, berets, or any other military accessories. The ban, outlined in an official circular dated July 2026, comes as authorities address concerns over personnel adopting attire associated exclusively with the Armée Nationale Tchadienne (ANT).
The order, signed by Koularambaye Koundja Julien, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development, was prompted by reports of military personnel reassigned to forestry roles and certain civilian staff continuing to display military-grade equipment. This practice has raised questions about professional conduct and the proper demarcation between military and civilian roles in environmental protection sectors.
Immediate enforcement and disciplinary consequences
The circular mandates that all central and regional service heads enforce compliance without delay. Violators will face disciplinary action, with authorities emphasizing that the ban is effective immediately. The move aims to clarify the distinct roles of forestry agents while ensuring adherence to civilian standards in environmental governance.
