A routine border checkpoint in northeastern Bénin turned into a significant operation this morning when police intercepted a group of 24 individuals attempting to cross into Burkina Faso.

At approximately 8:30 AM near the Okpara bridge in Kassouala, officers conducting an identity check uncovered the group, all of whom were identified as Nigerian nationals of Hausa ethnicity. Their intended destination was gold mining sites across the border in Burkina Faso.

While initial verification confirmed all 23 travelers possessed valid identification, authorities remain suspicious about the circumstances surrounding their journey. Particular attention is being paid to a 20-year-old Béninois man from Bassila, currently residing in Parakou, who is believed to have arranged this unauthorized movement.

All individuals were transported to the Tchaourou police station for further processing. An active investigation is underway to determine whether this incident represents part of a larger migrant smuggling network operating in the region.

This operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Bénin’s border security forces as they work to monitor cross-border movements and prevent illegal activities in the northern regions.
