On Saturday, Ousmane Sonko addressed a massive gathering of Pastef supporters in Linguère. In a forceful speech, the political leader did not mince words, directly challenging the current President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who had removed him from his position as Prime Minister last May.
“Senegalese people did not fight for this”
Before an enthusiastic audience, Ousmane Sonko condemned what he described as a significant divergence between the founding ideals that brought the movement to power and the current actions of the executive. In a particularly impactful moment, he asserted: “The Senegalese people did not vote for this. The Senegalese people did not fight for this. Lives were not lost for this. Individuals did not go to prison for this. The Senegalese people fought to change the system. Today, that very system is entrenched in the palace and continues to organize itself.”
This statement underscores a clear and now undeniable rupture between the Pastef leader and the individual currently holding the highest office, directly targeting the government’s management, which Sonko views as inconsistent with the struggles waged during their time in opposition. Ousmane Sonko, seemingly resolute in confronting President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Kiiraay – Les Patriotes républicains in upcoming elections, expressed unwavering confidence in a future victory, regardless of any political maneuvers by his adversaries.
“That is why I believe he can gather all the mayors or form alliances with all the parties he desires. I, for my part, address only the people. Because in a democracy, there is only one truth, and that is the people,” he declared, speaking directly to his militants and, by extension, to all Senegalese citizens.
