The ongoing discourse surrounding a potential dissolution of Senegal’s National Assembly remains a central topic in the nation’s political landscape. During a Pastef rally held this past Saturday in Linguère, Ousmane Sonko articulated his clear stance on such a scenario, simultaneously issuing a caution to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The Pastef leader asserted that dissolving the National Assembly and subsequently holding snap legislative elections would not benefit the current administration. He expressed confidence that his political faction would emerge as the decisive victor in such a contest.
“Should he organize local elections, we will defeat him. If he dissolves the Assembly, that would be even worse for him. In fact, that is precisely what we prefer, for we would overwhelmingly defeat him,” he stated emphatically.
Ousmane Sonko further elaborated, suggesting that the head of state could face significant political weakening following a potential electoral setback.
“Afterward, I even fear he might concede before 2029,” he added.
Beyond the electoral outlook, the Pastef president also appealed to his supporters to exercise both vigilance and restraint. He specifically advised them against succumbing to potential provocations.
Ousmane Sonko believes that certain elements are attempting to incite reactions from his party’s activists, thereby providing a pretext for implementing measures against Pastef.
“I call upon everyone to be vigilant and calm,” he declared. “They are currently seeking ways to provoke Pastef, hoping that our youth will react, which would then allow them to dissolve the party and revoke its official recognition.”
The Pastef leader concluded that if his militants successfully avoid provocations and remain mobilized, the upcoming electoral contests could result in a substantial advantage for his faction, which he characterized as a “mere cakewalk.”
