Leaders of Burkina Faso’s youth commerce sector convened in Ouagadougou on June 20, 2026, for a landmark national forum under the banner “From words to action: building a robust patriotic economy”. The gathering brought together merchants, entrepreneurs, and institutional partners to map out strategies for overcoming current commercial challenges and positioning the sector as a key driver of national growth.

Strengthening commercial foundations through unity and structure

At the core of discussions were critical priorities for Burkina Faso’s trading future: formalizing business operations, elevating professional capacities among young entrepreneurs, and fostering a more organized entrepreneurial ecosystem. Participants emphasized the need for collective action to transform informal trade into a structured, sustainable economic force.

Formalization as a gateway to opportunity

Ismaël Sawadogo, president of the Young Traders Association of Burkina Faso, underscored the urgency of transitioning from informal to formal business practices. He highlighted how registration and compliance unlock access to government contracts, financing programs, and institutional support mechanisms that remain inaccessible to unregistered traders.
