Violence erupts in N’Djamena: off-duty officer fires on colleagues
A shocking display of aggression unfolded recently around 5 PM near the Goudjé Barrière roundabout in N’Djamena, Chad. The incident occurred while traffic police officers were diligently managing the flow of vehicles to prevent significant congestion.
Initial accounts indicate that the driver of a Toyota Corolla, equipped with tinted windows, attempted to disregard directives from the on-duty traffic agents and force his way through. A police officer from the traffic brigade intervened, seeking to enforce regulations and reason with the driver, which quickly escalated into a heated altercation.
The individual, identified as an active police officer who had previously been assigned to the 3rd arrondissement police station but was reportedly removed from his post, then brandished a pistol. He discharged the weapon first into the air before aiming and firing directly at the police officers. Two agents sustained gunshot wounds, with one being struck in the ear. According to police sources, the injuries are not life-threatening.
During the chaotic scene, officers successfully managed to overpower the assailant and confiscate his firearm. However, before he was fully subdued, the aggressor also inflicted a knife wound to the forehead of another police officer, right in front of the Goudjé Barrière roundabout.
The injured officers were promptly transported to a medical facility to receive necessary care. Their condition continues to be closely monitored, though early reports offer reassurance regarding the victims who suffered gunshot wounds.
Following his apprehension, the assailant was handcuffed and taken into custody at the Police secours headquarters, under the General Directorate of Police. Several officers present during the incident observed that the individual appeared to be in a state of intoxication at the time of the attack.
An official investigation is now underway to meticulously determine the precise circumstances surrounding this violent confrontation, which has caused considerable alarm among both the public and law enforcement personnel present at the scene.
