In a post on X (formerly Twitter) late Thursday, June 11, 2026, U.S. Ambassador to Rabat Richard Duke Buchan III expressed his pride in hosting representatives from Morocco’s Southern provinces. The gathering marked the 250th anniversary of American independence. “We are grateful to our partners from Laâyoune and Dakhla for their presence and dedication to peace and progress in this region,” he stated.

Photographs from the event show the ambassador alongside key local figures: Moulay Hamdi Old Errechid, Mayor of Laâyoune; Ynja El Khattat, President of the Dakhla Oued Eddahab Regional Council; and Sidi Hamdi Oild Errechid, President of the Laayoune Sakia El Hamra region.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Embassy in Rabat hosted a major ceremony at the Chellah site, attended by Moroccan and international dignitaries. During his speech, Ambassador Buchan emphasized Morocco’s commitment to the Sahara region: “We support His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of transforming the Sahara into a hub for transatlantic partnership and opportunity.” He also highlighted the deep historical ties between the U.S. and Morocco, adding: “This partnership, rooted in history and strengthened by trust, looks ahead to the next 250 years. Together, we are building stronger economic and human connections between our peoples.”
