DRC constitution debate: Tshisekedi urged to ease political climate

$Le Président Félix Tshisekedi à l’ouverture de la première édition de la Semaine nationale du climat, le 27/10/2025 Présidence RDC”> As tensions mount over the possibility of revising the constitution, the human rights organisation Voix des sans voix (VSV) is calling on President Félix Tshisekedi to personally intervene and calm the political atmosphere in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.In a statement released Wednesday 24 June in Kinshasa, the rights group warns that the current environment could trigger a surge in tensions and lead to human rights abuses unless swift measures to de-escalate are taken.Félix Tshisekedi’s responsibilityAccording to the VSV, the head of state remains the most suitable figure to foster reconciliation and safeguard national unity amid the ongoing insecurity in the eastern part of the country.The organisation urges authorities to amplify messages of national cohesion and to direct their supporters to stop the kind of rhetoric that could deepen divisions among the population.For the VSV, political leaders from all sides must exercise restraint to prevent an escalation of tensions. It argues that the supreme interest of the nation should prevail over partisan or community considerations.In its communiqué, the Voix des sans voix notes that the DRC is going through a particularly delicate period due to the security crisis in the east. In this context, it says preserving national unity and strengthening solidarity among Congolese people is essential.The organisation also warns against speeches that could inflame political, ethnic or regional fractures, stressing that no affiliation should override the national interest.Call to respect democratic principlesFinally, the VSV invites all political actors to uphold democratic principles, human rights and fundamental freedoms. It emphasises that the country’s stability largely depends on the ability of leaders and their supporters to prioritise dialogue and political responsibility.For the organisation, an intervention by the President of the Republic in favour of appeasement could help reduce tensions and avoid a further deterioration of the political climate.<div class=$
