The University of Datcha is set to launch a new era in higher education. In a decisive move, the government has confirmed the appointment of Professor Essohanam Batchana as the inaugural president of Togo’s third public university. This strategic selection underscores the institution’s ambition to become a beacon of academic excellence in the Plateaux region.
Leading with expertise and vision
Professor Batchana, a distinguished historian and full professor specializing in political history and international relations, previously served as the Director of Academic Affairs and Registrar at the University of Lomé. His deep understanding of academic governance will be instrumental in shaping the fledgling university’s policies and operational framework.
To ensure a balanced leadership, he will be joined by Professor Kperkouma Walla, an expert in botany and plant ecology, who has been named the first vice-president. Together, this dynamic duo will spearhead the establishment of the university’s administrative, scientific, and pedagogical foundations.
Addressing educational challenges and fostering regional growth
Launched through a cabinet decision in September 2023, the University of Datcha was conceived to tackle two pressing challenges in Togo’s higher education sector:
- Alleviating campus congestion: Easing the overcrowding at existing universities in Lomé and Kara to improve learning environments.
- Stimulating local development: Aligning educational offerings with the economic, social, and cultural needs of the Plateaux region to drive sustainable growth.
The institution is designed to be forward-thinking, with a curriculum centered on emerging technologies, applied sciences, and vocational training. This approach ensures graduates are equipped with the skills demanded by the modern job market, fostering a seamless transition from education to employment.
