The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, held a pivotal meeting on June 4 with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (UPA), on the sidelines of the 85th session of the UPA’s Executive Committee in Dakar.
The closed-door discussion centered on critical challenges facing the UPA as it seeks to strengthen its role in shaping continental policies. Sonko emphasized the urgent need for structural reforms to enhance the organization’s operational efficiency and amplify its influence on key political and institutional decisions across Africa.
Key proposals included calls for greater alignment between UPA resolutions and those of the African Union, aiming to foster more cohesive and impactful governance across African institutions. Sonko stressed that such harmonization would not only streamline decision-making but also ensure that parliamentary voices across the continent contribute more effectively to continental priorities.
The meeting underscored the broader commitment to revitalizing pan-African parliamentary cooperation, positioning the UPA as a more dynamic and responsive force in addressing the continent’s evolving political landscape.
