In a bold move to combat plastic pollution, SOLIBRA has unveiled the ECO BOX initiative in Treichville, marking a significant step toward sustainable waste management and circular economy practices. The launch coincides with World Plastic Bag Free Day, celebrated annually on July 3, positioning the project as a timely response to pressing environmental challenges in the Côte d’Ivoire capital.
Treichville was selected as the pilot site due to its high daily plastic waste output, which has long strained the area’s drainage systems and sanitation infrastructure. The ECO BOX initiative aims to convert this waste into valuable resources through a structured recycling and collection framework, transforming a persistent problem into an economic opportunity.
The project brings together key stakeholders: SOLIBRA, the local J’Adore de Treichville Foundation, and BIRWAST, a leader in plastic waste recycling. This partnership seeks to revolutionize waste management in Treichville by enhancing environmental cleanliness, reducing flood risks from clogged drains, and fostering local job creation.
To kickstart operations, essential equipment has been distributed to the teams, including six wheelbarrows, a collection tricycle, 80 garbage bags, twelve rakes, gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms. These tools will enable efficient waste collection and sorting, laying the groundwork for a cleaner, more sustainable Treichville.
The initiative’s goals extend beyond waste reduction. It prioritizes employment opportunities, particularly for young residents who will serve as collection agents and drivers, thereby injecting economic vitality into the community. Additionally, the project emphasizes public awareness, with collectors engaging residents to promote proper waste sorting and hygiene practices.
The launch event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony to symbolize the project’s commencement, followed by the symbolic handover of the first collection tricycle to a local agent. This agent will now traverse Treichville’s streets, collecting plastic waste and setting an example for the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
