Senegal’s stance on homosexuality under the prime minister’s leadership

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has once again underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening laws regarding homosexuality in Senegal. In doing so, he emphasized the importance of strict enforcement of legislation. Amid growing international scrutiny, he firmly rejected external interference while asserting the country’s autonomy on this delicate matter.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has reiterated the government’s resolve to tighten laws concerning homosexuality in Senegal. His remarks come as part of an ongoing national discussion about the enforcement of legislation and the government’s policy direction. During a recent address, he made it clear that the laws in question apply to all citizens without exception.

Addressing concerns about selective enforcement, Sonko declared, “No one will be shielded from these laws—whether they are prominent figures or ordinary citizens. When a law is enacted, it is impartial and must be applied with full rigor.” He further argued that previous administrations had failed to act decisively on this issue, stating, “This is not a new phenomenon. Past regimes did not take the necessary measures, and that is why the situation has escalated to this point.”

The Prime Minister also addressed international criticism, particularly from Western nations. He asserted, “There is no opposition to these laws within Senegal. The only criticisms come from abroad, especially from France. We do not need lessons from them.” He went on to dismiss suggestions of a legislative moratorium, adding, “Some African intellectuals have also tried to interfere, but no pause in this process will occur.”
