President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismisses Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister
In a decisive move broadcast on national television, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially relieved Ousmane Sonko of his duties as Prime Minister and head of government. The announcement marks the end of a partnership that has seen growing tensions between the two leaders.
With Sonko’s removal, the entire ministerial cabinet and state secretaries have also been dismissed from their positions. The decision was swiftly followed by a public statement from Sonko on his social media, where he expressed relief with the words: “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully in Keur Gorgui.”
This development also triggers the dissolution of the entire government. The Presidency has confirmed that a new Prime Minister will be appointed, and a fresh cabinet formed under President Faye’s leadership.
From political ally to separation
The relationship between President Faye and Ousmane Sonko traces back to the 2024 election, when Sonko—prevented from running himself—chose Faye as the presidential candidate. Sonko’s support played a crucial role in Faye’s landslide victory in the first round, securing over 54% of the vote.
Since taking office, Faye has moved to reshape the political landscape, signaling a break from the policies and figures associated with his predecessor’s era. The dismissal of Sonko underscores this transition, as the new administration prepares to chart its own course.
