The political climate in Chad continues to intensify as opposition leader Succès Masra remains behind bars following the Supreme Court’s rejection of his appeal this week.

Masra, a former Prime Minister arrested in May 2025, was handed a 20-year prison sentence on charges of “disseminating hateful and xenophobic messages” and “complicity in murder.” The verdict has drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups, who describe the trial as politically motivated.

Earlier this month, the N’Djamena Court of First Instance sentenced eight leaders from the former political coordination group (GCAP) to eight years in prison each, with prosecutors initially seeking a decade behind bars.

In a live discussion moderated by journalist Éric Topona, panelists dissected the latest political developments in Chad:

  • Maître Mamadou Ismaïla Konaté, a Malian lawyer and former Minister of Justice, offered legal perspectives on the case.
  • Abdel-Nasser Garboa, spokesperson for the ruling Mouvement patriotique du salut (MPS), provided insights from the government’s standpoint.
  • Clément Sianka, communications director for the opposition party RNDT le Réveil—led by detained leader Albert Pahimi Padacké—shared the party’s response to the crackdown.

The panel emphasized the need for dialogue to ease tensions and restore stability in Chad’s fragile political landscape.
