Government ramps up flood prevention ahead of rainy season
The Prime Minister of Senegal has directed all relevant ministers to implement urgent measures to mitigate flood risks before the onset of the upcoming rainy season. During Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, Ousmane Sonko emphasized the need for proactive risk management and comprehensive preparedness.
According to government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye, several immediate actions must be enforced without delay. These include strategic deployment of emergency response resources and the organization of an interministerial simulation drill before June 15, 2026 to assess the state’s disaster response capabilities.
Key flood prevention initiatives underway
The cabinet’s statement highlights ongoing preparatory efforts, such as:
- Clearing and maintaining drainage networks to ensure proper water flow
- Inspecting and reinforcing flood control infrastructure
- Deploying additional water pumps in high-risk areas
- Finalizing emergency response plans for vulnerable regions
Coordinated approach to flood management
Sonko stressed the importance of cross-departmental collaboration, calling for seamless coordination under the leadership of the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation. The Ministry of the Interior will support civil protection and crisis management efforts, ensuring a unified national response to potential flooding.
