The political atmosphere in Senegal remains fraught with tension over the constitutional reform and the dynamics between ruling coalition and opposition leaders. On Sunday, Modou Mbacké Bara Dolly, former head of the PDS parliamentary group, unleashed a blistering attack on Ousmane Sonko, current president of the National Assembly and leader of the Pastef party.

A frontal assault against Pastef’s leader

During an aggressive intervention, Dolly branded Sonko as the “greatest manipulator on the political scene”, accusing him of making contradictory statements and repeatedly leveling allegations without providing evidence.

Accusations on several sensitive cases

The former deputy brought up a number of cases that have shaped Senegal’s political debate in recent years, including the Adji Sarr affair, the claims about supposed payments of 10 million CFA francs to MPs, and the rumor of a public account valued at 1,000 billion CFA francs.

According to Dolly, these assertions were never substantiated. “The deputies never received the 10 million he talked about. That was false,” he stated, casting doubt on the credibility of Sonko’s past declarations.

Questioning Sonko’s political consistency

Modou Mbacké Bara Dolly also charged that Sonko has renounced several of his earlier positions. He argued that the political discourse of the former prime minister has evolved to the point of contradicting his original commitments.

Dolly claimed that Sonko has gradually moved away from the breakaway logic he once championed, adopting instead a stance driven by his own political interests.

Revelations about past political ties

The former PDS parliamentary leader also discussed Sonko’s relationships with certain past political actors, alleging that exchanges took place regarding potential electoral alliances.

He further asserted that discussions involving Karim Wade were held with a view to a presidential candidacy, while stating that Sonko did not want other Pastef figures to carry the party’s banner.

Constitutional debate at the heart of tensions

Finally, Modou Mbacké Bara Dolly addressed the controversy surrounding the constitutional revision. In his view, the current debate goes beyond the figure of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and directly concerns the country’s institutional stability.

He argued that certain ongoing initiatives aim to deeply alter the power structure, something he firmly rejects. “It is not about Diomaye, but about the Constitution,” he concluded.
