Currently, the results are far from ideal. While the authorities in Mali aimed to immunize 70% of the population aged 12 and older, the actual vaccination coverage remains stagnant at just 8%. To address this gap, a delegation from the United Nations visited the country in early October to assist local officials in achieving the targets outlined in the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan (PNDV).

“Various initiatives are presently underway. We are here to collaborate with the government and its associates to bolster the ongoing efforts and safeguard the citizens against Covid,” stated Ted Chaiban, the UN‘s lead coordinator for global vaccine readiness.

The challenge of public persuasion

In Bamako, the official commended the Mali Red Cross for its extensive organizational framework in the fight against the pandemic. This system involves multiple stakeholders focused on training volunteers, raising community awareness, and providing protective gear to combat the virus, which has recently seen a decline in intensity across the West Africa region.

However, convincing some residents of Mali to accept the vaccine is proving to be a difficult mission. Many remain skeptical about immunization, particularly as the prevalence of Covid-19 continues to drop significantly.
